Time Flies and I'm 24

It's become a bit of a tradition for me to make these birthday entries, so I figured that I should do one this year as well. I've been feeling a little odd about my birthday this time around. I haven't really felt excited as it approached and I didn't want to do anything particular to celebrate it. I just wanted to spend time with my parents, brother, our animals and cosy up. Simple but wonderful.

My loved ones still wanted to celebrate me, even as I was a bit in avoidance about the celebration and the day in itself approaching. Mum asked for a wish list multiple times, still to no avail (sorry, Mum) and everyone kept asking me if and what I wanted to do for my birthday. Eventually, I settled on pancakes and presents in the morning with the family and Mum's lasagne and proper family hygge in the evening with conversations and a film. It was special and commemorating the day but it didn't involve a lot of people or a lot of stress.

I actually started off my birthday this year on a bit of a fun tangent. I've spoken about YouTubers on here before and a couple of years ago, I found a video game called Undertale through them. I've never played it myself but I have seen multiple people play through it in the different routes. Recently, Toby Fox created a follow-up called Deltarune of which he had just released the first chapter for free. I discovered that I could load it up on my Mac, and so I spent nearly four hours getting lost in the alternative universe of Undertale. I don't play video games that often but that was quite something special and I hope it can be made into a fully fledged game one day.

As a result of my late night gaming, I only got around four hours of sleep. It wasn't ideal but thankfully, it worked out well with the whole low-key vibe of the day. Waking up to the smell of Dad making pancakes in the kitchen was quite wonderful, even if I was squinting a little and operating on too little sleep. Everyone came in to "wake" me with song and flags and sloppy kisses (thanks, Hallie). The kitchen table was decked out with the famous Nutella toast with sprinkles cut into my new age, a stack of pancakes, lots of flags and tea to everyone. It was perfect. The little Eeyore figure on my plate made my heart melt.

There's just something about pancakes (crepes) and Nutella that makes me feel giddy and happy. They're delicious but it's also just a nice treat and it always makes me think of my family. Nutella was a regular portion of my diet when I was younger, breakfast and night snack, and eating it always reminds me of my happy childhood. The effort with decorating and pancake making goes respectively to Mum and Dad and I'm glad they indulged me in my wish for a family breakfast.

Presents in the morning used to be a regular tradition when my brother and I was younger. It doesn't always work out like that now that we're older and schedules are busier for everyone but it was Sunday, and so I was more than happy to keep the tradition alive. I'm a sucker for traditions after all. Despite not giving an actual proper wish list, I loved my presents a whole lot. I got some baking equipment and a flower from my grandmother, riding socks from Hallie and Money, Hunter wellies and cleaning equipment for my bathroom from Mum and Dad and a Peugeot saltshaker from A.

After the morning session, we split up and I borrowed Archie to drive out to visit my horse. I had done our usual Sunday training the day before, so I decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and head out to the forest. I've been using the forest quite a lot this year, more than usual, and Money has gotten better at staying calm and listening to me and we have so many happy and enjoyable rides now. Even today, when she got a little tense and fast towards the end, she eventually listened to my instructions and walked at a normal relaxed pace again.

The colours were absolutely beautiful and I love the atmosphere in the forest. It's full of life and people, from guys on mountain bikes, people walking their dogs, joggers and families out for a walk. Money gets spooked by things easily but mostly people are good at stepping aside or slowing down and I wouldn't be without the people on days like this. It's nice to see fellow humans out enjoying nature. The colours in the photo below might signify one of my favourite things about autumn in that some trees have yellow and orange leaves while some have yet to lose their green colour completely. It creates such a stunning visual.

Once I came back to the family house, I dug into the two remaining pancakes that had survived the breakfast. I went super indulgent with the amount of Nutella and I might have dug out the sprinkles and gone ham with them as well. Hey, it's only your birthday once a year and Hallie greatly approved of my choices, even if she was convinced she deserved more of the feast than just the end pieces.

I decided to take a nap for two hours in the afternoon to catch up on a little bit of that missed sleep. Hallie curled up with me instantly and I drifted off to a peaceful sleep. I awoke feeling a bit refreshed and when I checked my phone, I discovered more photos from the litter of boxer puppies where we were expecting one of the lovely females. We hadn't yet found out which one out of the three but with new photos shared, I went down to find Mum and ask her if she had heard anything from the breeder. Upon closer inspection of her phone, she found a lovely message and we now know which one of the lovelies that we will be getting. It won't be until early December that she's big enough to leave home but it still felt a bit like an birthday present to know definitively which one would be ours.

Dinner time was approaching and the kitchen was smelling heavenly for the second time in the day. This time it was Mum's famous lasagne doing the job. It's quite fun and odd to look back at how I used to dislike this dish and now it's one of my favourites. I guess people do change and grow up. It was utterly delicious and we managed to devour the whole thing just the four of us. We try to sit down and eat as a family every night that it is possible but today was still special as we lingered at the table and we didn't just split after twenty minutes. It was nice to just talk, share laughs and smiles.

Everyone was a bit tired, myself included, so I decided that we would watch a film and just chill out for a bit. When we flew to USA this summer, A got stuck with a malfunctioning screen that didn't allow him to pick what he wanted to watch and he just had to channel surf. As consequence, he ended up watching one called Blockers about three times, in different bits. He quite liked it and we had talked about watching it after we came home but it wasn't available anywhere yet. On a whim, we looked it up today and it was possible to rent on iTunes and so the pick was quite easy. It was a bit of a cliché film but in a good way and we got a lot of nice laughs out if it together.

I feel like it's quite normal for birthdays to feel like they go by in a flash. Today was no exception. The day went quickly but at the same time I managed to savour a lot of nice moments and appreciate how fortunate I am. My head might be a mess at times, currently a bit more than usual, but I'm still so lucky to be surrounded by a loving family and the animals in my life. I've also had an influx of happy birthday wishes on Facebook from friends and family, which makes me smile as well.

I wasn't really looking forward to this birthday but it turned out to be a very lovely day anyway. Maybe the low expectations was a good way to go or maybe it would have been just as good if I had hyped it up beforehand. I couldn't possibly know. However, I do know that on days like this I'm very thankful for my life and all of the people in it.
