My Very First Flat

It feels a little more real now. I've stood on the hardwood floors, I've hung out of my french balcony and I've traced my hands over the newly painted white walls. I've been handed three sets of keys that rest in my pocket and I've gotten to unlock and lock the front door of my new home. It's bare and void of personal details right now but I do think it can turn into a wonderful home.
I was a bit on edge when I arrived with my father. I had only seen photos of this place from the outside and being there was a different experience. We were waiting outside for a man from the estate's office to arrive and he did promptly and shook my hand. He showed me the storage unit I have in the basement first and then we walked up a rather dodgy looking hallway.

The apartment complex is an old one but it has been renovated in 2002. As mentioned, the hallway was a bit odd and there was this weird pipe along the stairs. It's a garbage disposal thing - which is super handy and retro but at the time, I was just frowning at it, as I climbed the stairs to the second floor. However, I couldn't help but smile when I walked into the flat itself.

Polished floors, white clean walls and lots of natural light, despite it being just a one room flat. Great closet space in the small hallway, a wonderful kitchen and despite the age of the place, it felt new and exciting. There's still few things to be done, I'm getting a new fridge soon and I've been offered to have the bathroom retiled, which I will happily accept, even if it means I'll be without use of the bathroom for a week or so. There is a fridge though but it's old, so the man from the estate office had put in an order for a new one.

There's small cracks and stuff here and there and I have two weeks to fill out a list of damages, so that I will not be charged with them when I'm leaving the place. I don't mind the lingering effects that tell me that this place has been a home before. I knew it had and for me that just adds more character to it. Things don't need to be perfect and sterile and as long as the damages are small and inconsequential, it's perfectly fine.

It's small but it's nice and I think it can be a wonderful starting place for living on my own. And if anything happens, the estate office is just down the pathway and they're there to help me. So are my parents, of course, and 16 km. is not that far if I should need them. Dad already started measuring out the room and we're discussing furniture and this will just be freaking great, even if I'm not sure where things will go yet. I have the time to figure that out. The place is mine now! I have a flat. My very own. Rented but still. It's mine and I think I will like it here.

I had a meeting to attend at work but afterwards when Mum got off from work, we headed out to the flat so that she could see it too. It had gotten dark by then and we got the torch app out on our phones because the place was so dark. The lightbulb in the kitchen had been broken earlier and there wasn't any lights in the room yet, however, we couldn't get the bathroom light to work either at first. It turned out that we had both been flipping the wrong swift and it was working.

We discussed interior decorating as I ended up sliding down on the floor. I had originally sat down to lie back and measure out the length but I ended up just sitting there and showing Mum what I was talking about with the placement of the bed. The floor felt soft and inviting beneath me and I kept running my hands over the newly polished wood. Despite officially having the flat, it was still void of furniture and the bathroom should preferably be fixed before I officially move in but thankfully, I'm not in any rush, even if I am very excited to have the space.

The following day, Dad surprised me by coming home early as he wanted to pick up some things for the flat. We had packed two boxes the evening before, one with the majority of my clothes and the other with things for the kitchen and some bits and bobs. We also dug out my old bookcase, which had been stored in the basement since it left my room. My old desk, which had been more of a storage surface than a desk, got put into the car as well and my old Thai mattress. Dad also tossed in a few cleaning products, a blow-up mattress, a couple of lamps and his new tool box. We drove to the flat and walked back and forth about five times to get the stuff into the place.

The old and a bit unstable bookcase was placed in my room in the cellar and the desk has been temporarily moved into the flat so we have a surface to work on. Along with it went the red chair, which I inherited from my brother and my parents' foldable chair. It was odd to have actual furniture in the place but I quite like it, even if nothing is permanently there yet.

We drove back home to meet up with Mum and head to IKEA and ILVA. I wanted a Kallax shelving unit from IKEA for when I got my own place and I wanted to see them in person to finally decide on size and colour, which I did, even if I didn't bring it home at that moment. I did manage to pick up various things for the flat, most notably a set with 18 bowls and plates in two different sizes, six of the big glasses I like and then some utility brushes, garbage bags and such. We also kept an eye out for a dining table but nothing caught my fancy. We headed onwards to ILVA afterwards to look at tables and sofas and I found a sofa I really liked, which was 25% on sale! It'll take approximately three weeks for it to come but that's fine. It like a dusty blue two-person sofa that was really nice to sit in. My parents wanted to buy it for me as a moving in present. So far the first two days of being of having my own place has been great and exciting.

Saturday did not include any visits to the flat or any shopping for it, except for the fact that I went to Lyngby with Mum to take advantage of Magasin's sale and that yielded some new shampoo and conditioner, a new concealer and eye cream. Sunday, we drove to IKEA and Jysk to pick up the shelving unit I had decided on and look at beds. I finally decided on a bed, even if it will be roughly two weeks before it will be ready for delivery. It's quite a lot of money but it's an investment and I've wanted a proper bed with a quality mattress and elevation as well. I'm just happy that it's ordered and done with. We picked up the 5x5 Kallax from IKEA and headed to the flat in two cars and my brother got a chance to see my place. We also brought along the different bits and bobs we bought at IKEA Friday, as well as some stuff I've gotten from the family kitchen. Dad immediately started building the shelving unit, though he did ask for explicit permission.

Mum and A started washing down the cabinets in the kitchen anew and we started to move stuff into the drawers and cupboards and the place started to feel a bit more like a home now that it's less empty. Dad also insisted on blowing up the blow-up bed, which worked out okay for storing the part of the shelving unit. IKEA furniture is quite easy to make but it still required the combined effort of my father, my brother and myself to get it up. My first new piece of furniture. Mum also went down to the local Brugsen to buy some soda and biscuits after she'd taken it upon herself to unpack the box of my clothes and store them in the hallway closet. It was a bit odd but also very nice to have my family gathered in my new flat and it felt a lot more comfy by the time we left it.

It has been a very interesting couple of days and though I have not moved out quite yet and we're still waiting to hear when the bathroom floor will be torn up, I'm very excited to officially have my own flat. I think it will be such a great thing and I'm excited to fill the space with all of my stuff and get my new furniture. It will be a gradual process but I think it's already coming along nicely. Hopefully, I'll be fully settled in by the end of the month.

I'm so happy that my parents and my brother have been so supportive and helpful during this process and thereby they have made it a lot less scary. I'll gradually start packing down more things and we'll do trips every now and again until I have properly moved all of my stuff.
