Nine Favourite Lyrics - Part 2 | Lists
Over a year ago, I made a post where I listed some of my favourite song lyrics. It was something I did on a whim, because I had recalled several lyrics that spoke to me and I wanted to write them down commemorate them. I had sort of forgotten about it but over the past couple of months, I kept finding more and more lyrics in songs that also struck a cord with me, so I decided to make a sequel to the original post.
All songs included are from 2015-2018 but I have been listening to them throughout the past couple of months in particular. Troye has gained a repeat spot as the only artist and now I've even included two of his songs but I did always really love his lyrics. Again, I made a little collage of the album or single cover art to capture the nine lyrics I want to talk about in this post.
I think I grow more and more fond of music with every day that pass. Hardly a day goes by when I don't listen to music. I listen to it when I drive, I listen to it when I study, I listen to it when I write, I listen to it with friends, I listen to it when I'm feeling anxious and I start humming and singing songs under my breath when I'm in a good mood. Music is a blessing and while I love melodies, I have always had a soft spot for lyrics. When an artist can mould words in an interesting way I always find a smile on my face while listening. I love writing so much and that's essentially what song lyrics are and their ability to create new perspectives or worlds all the while going along with a melody is so captivating.
Now without further ado. Below are nine song lyrics that I love a whole lot and like last time, I had to end on a bonus video.
When I first heard this song, I was bleary eyed and it was early in the morning and the single had been released during the night. I didn't particular like it but as I took a moment to properly listen to it when I watched a video of Troye perform it, I gained a whole new appreciation for it. And the lyric above just made my heart clench, probably because I've followed Troye for long enough to know who this song is about and I also know his ex-partner through his videos. Troye put so much of what he felt about their relationship in his first album and then the relationship fell apart just months after the release and his ex had to listen to the whole world singing along to the songs of love that were no more.
And that's it! I just got an itch to make this today and I'm so glad that I took the time to sit down and write it. In preparation as I sat down to write this, I went back to the original post and read over the lyrics listed there and that just made me fall in love with them anew and I'm so happy that I get to go back to old posts like that. While the songs listed on here might not necessarily be my favourites, they are all songs that I listen to a lot and really like.
But as I mentioned, I wanted to add a bonus song for this post as well. I was debating between two choices but then I remembered about The Internet Is Here and I knew I just had to add that one. Not only because is it a geeky song about finding comfort and community on the Internet, or because it's from Dan and Phil's The Amazing Tour Is Not On Fire or because the video below was made for charity. Mostly it's because I've had a habit of putting it on in the background while I do my daily Flow Free patterns and it always puts me in a good mood.
And that concludes the part 2 that I mentioned in the original post and then forgot about for over a year. But it's never too late to come back to something like this. It's a pleasure and almost therapeutic to look back over some imagery and metaphors that I like and I have to praise the lyricists that have written the lines I mentioned in this post because they all made their way into my heart and positively enriched my life. Words are so powerful and I think I will always geek out about them.

I was your amber
But now she’s your shade of gold
I love Demi's voice and I love a lot of her songs and Stone Cold became a fast favourite from that album. You can hear the desperation in her voice and the lyrics above vibrates through you. She was something shiny and beautiful but amber is nothing compared to gold. Gold has real value whereas amber is something that's created by accident and not worth much. The comparison makes it seem like amber was good enough for this person until they came across something glossier.
I didn’t know I was starving ’till I tasted you
———————————————
I was so much younger yesterday
This song was on the radio a whole lot when it first came out. I was a bit under the impression that it was just a temporary hit song that didn't really have any substance but I did really like the lyrics above. The notion of not knowing what you're missing until you get a chance to experience it, is something that can be applied to many scenarios. And as for the second lyric, I just related so deeply to it. You feel like you can change so much in such a short time and be forced to grow up from one day to the other.
They all say that nothing ever changes
Through the new lines that are on their faces
Troye Sivan - SURBURBIA
Troye's whole first album had feels of suburbia and moving away from home and growing up and I feel like this song managed to capture the essence of the album. There are many good lines in this song but the one above is my favourite. He's left home and now he's talking to his family, who will reassure him that everything is just the same but at the same time, he can see signs of ageing on their faces and he knows that he's missing family events while he's traveling the world and building his singing career. The fact that the line repeats just beats in the message even more.
She's not even drop dead gorgeous
But she kills me anyway,
Shawn Mendes - Like This
I like the feel of Shawn Mendes' music and I remember being baffled at his young age when I first discovered his music. This particular line is freaking great as he takes a common phase "drop dead gorgeous" and say that despite of not meeting this ideal, she's still able to take his breath away. I feel like there are parallels - intentional or not - to Shakespeare's Sonnet 130, which rejects the portrayal of women like otherworldly and instead say that he loves a normal human woman instead of a beauty ideal.
It's phonetic how our mouths grip
Almost too tight to the words we're sayin’
I only discovered Julia Michaels about half a year ago but I instantly loved her voice. Her first EP is great, though a couple of her songs get a bit more sexual than I feel comfortable with. The lyrics above instantly caught my attention - because I'm a language nerd and love phonetics - and it just managed to perfectly capture the image of lips forming different shapes one after another as they meet in a kiss.
I walk on water
But I ain't no Jesus
I walk on water
But only when it freezes
———————————————
If I walked on water, I would drown
I don't really listen to a lot of Eminem or Beyoncé's music but when I came across this song, I instantly like the imagery of walking on a frozen lake and the sounds of ice cracking that accompany the sound. It's a song about being unable to live up to the God-like way some people look at artists. They are just humans like everyone else and the only way they are able to walk on water is when it's been frozen. If they attempt to walk over unfrozen water, they will sink down and drown.
I’ve learned to slam on the brake
Before I even turn the key
———————————————
Step out, step out of the sun
If you keep getting burned
———————————————
When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around
Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound?
I first heard this song in a cover by Dodie, Thomas Sanders and Ben J. Piece and I loved it so much. Gradually, I moved over to listen to the whole Dear Evan Hansen soundtrack and now I'm a bit sad that I'll probably never be able to see the musical. But this song has a special place in my heart. I love the imagery that are the two first lyric I picked out. Anxiety stops you from doing things before you've even tried to start. And when you've stepped into the sun enough times and you just keep having bad experience after bad experience, you learn to stay in the shadows, away from the limelight. And I adored the way they incorporated that old philosophical thought experiment: "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it does it make a sound?". It captures the feeling of being alone and misunderstood, caught in depression and feeling like no one would hear you if you did something.
I haven't heard much of Dua Lipa's music but I barked out a laugh when I first heard this lyric. It very simply explained their situation and I love making good use of an already established phrase. So the whole under // over comparison feels so damn perfect. It's also a reminder that you can't start to move past someone if you don't allow yourself a little distance.
People danced to the sound of your heart
The world sang along to it falling apart
