Nine Favourite Song Lyrics | Lists
I haven't always appreciated music but since I got an iPhone at age 16, I was properly introduced to music and haven't looked back since. It's become something I go to when I'm stressed and I need to shut off the world for a while. I use it as a background track when I'm writing. I'm singing and dancing along to my favourite songs when I'm happy.
While melody is the first introduction to a song, I'm a sucker for lyrics even more and here is a short list of lyrics that one way or another struck a cord with me.
Struck a cord, get it? I use that expression quite a lot but it's very appropriate for this post. This list of songs below is from a variety of artists, who differ in popularity and style. Some of them I've listen to religiously like Troye Sivan, Lukas Graham and Adele while others I've mostly listened to sporadically or only heard one song by them. Some of the songs are singles while others are "just" part of an album.
This is not a list of my favourite songs, though some of them make that list as well. Each song has a couple of lines of lyrics that I find perfectly strung together or they have such a clever word-play or phrasing or they work well with the beat of the song.
Something about the lyrics below pleased my eardrums when I first heard them or when I first paid attention to the lyrics, which I sometimes forget when I initially hear a song.
This was a lyric I instantly took a liking to because the imagery is so vivid of someone walking so carefully not to cause a ruckus but then deciding this tip-toing life is not for them. Also, Alessia has a beautiful voice and I love her single Here as well.
This is a song I first heard on the radio and later found it included on Common Culture Vol. III, which made me rediscover it. I've loved phrase "I got a way with words" a lot because I love the concept of being able to shape reality with words and having it flipped around in this love song works so well.
I actually got introduced to Halsey's music because I saw this lyric everywhere online. So it might seem a bit cliché to include it here but I appreciate it just as many other people do. We're moulded by the experiences we go through and the comparison to colour rubbing off is quite brilliant.
I've followed Troye's music before he got signed and this song off his first album, though not a single, is one of my favourite of his, which is saying a lot. I love the double mention on the word "kid" with two different meanings. I had to add the latter part as well from a different part of the song, as you can practically hear the desperation and heartbreak and it's one of Troye's own favourite lyrics.
I had never heard of either musicians involved in this song before and have not looked them up. However, this song captures the thin line between love and hate and how difficult it can be to let go of someone you love. I also had to add an extra line as I think too many people my age relates to being constantly tired but somehow not being it in the right company.
This song actually caught be a bit off guard. I had listened to it a lot on the radio while driving but never paid close attention, though I did note the distinctive sound of the singer. However, one time I did pay attention and finally heard the line above, which is poetic, heart-breaking and playing on a known saying.
This one is a very old favourite - the oldest on this list - as I first heard this song in 2012. I guess it could be considered cheating and not really Lukas' words entirely, as it's a rephrasing of a Benito Mussolini quote and a quote from poem Paradise Lost by John Milton. But the last line is solely original and the choice to put them together works so beautifully.
Ever since I discovered Taylor Swift, I've liked her music and the imagery in some of her songs is so eloquent. While she mainly writes love songs, this is what keeps her "cliché topic" apart from the rest. In this case, she perfectly shows how she's delicate and dreamy a first glance but underneath there's thorns ready to tear you apart and nightmares ready to haunt you.
I only recently listened to Adele's new album as it finally got on Spotify and the lyrics of this song stood out amongst a sea of beautiful songs on the album. She's been tainted from her environment, like a lake from pollution, and now everyone she gets into contact with is stained because the pollution is so deep within her.
That was my countdown of nine of my favourite lyrics but I have to confess I've already collected a couple more since hitting the 9 mark, so there may very well be a part 2 at some point. I'm not quite done as I've been loving the lyrics of another piece of music very, very much. Though, it is not a traditional song but rather a series of five original songs made exclusively for YouTube and performing by YouTuber Lilly Singh.
However, I will add it as a bonus to this post because the lyrics throughout all five songs are so important and how well they work to represent the voices inside her head fighting for dominance is so well-thought out. It's quite the masterpiece lyrically.

I lose my balance on these eggshells
You tell me to thread
I’d rather be a wild one instead
This was a lyric I instantly took a liking to because the imagery is so vivid of someone walking so carefully not to cause a ruckus but then deciding this tip-toing life is not for them. Also, Alessia has a beautiful voice and I love her single Here as well.
People always said
I got a way with words
But when it comes to you
I don’t know what to say
This is a song I first heard on the radio and later found it included on Common Culture Vol. III, which made me rediscover it. I've loved phrase "I got a way with words" a lot because I love the concept of being able to shape reality with words and having it flipped around in this love song works so well.
You were red, and you liked because I was blue
But you touched me, and suddenly I was a lilac sky
Then you decided purple just wasn’t for you
I actually got introduced to Halsey's music because I saw this lyric everywhere online. So it might seem a bit cliché to include it here but I appreciate it just as many other people do. We're moulded by the experiences we go through and the comparison to colour rubbing off is quite brilliant.
I’m just some dumb kid
Trying to kid myself
That I got my shit together

So what are you waiting for?
Cause someone could love you more
Troye Sivan - Lost Boy
I've followed Troye's music before he got signed and this song off his first album, though not a single, is one of my favourite of his, which is saying a lot. I love the double mention on the word "kid" with two different meanings. I had to add the latter part as well from a different part of the song, as you can practically hear the desperation and heartbreak and it's one of Troye's own favourite lyrics.
I hate you, I love you
I hate that I love you
Don’t want to, but I can’t put
Nobody else above you

I’m always tired but never of you
I had never heard of either musicians involved in this song before and have not looked them up. However, this song captures the thin line between love and hate and how difficult it can be to let go of someone you love. I also had to add an extra line as I think too many people my age relates to being constantly tired but somehow not being it in the right company.
You make sure to pat my back
Right where the knife goes
Oscar Bandersen - Guide You (feat. ANYA)
This song actually caught be a bit off guard. I had listened to it a lot on the radio while driving but never paid close attention, though I did note the distinctive sound of the singer. However, one time I did pay attention and finally heard the line above, which is poetic, heart-breaking and playing on a known saying.
I'd rather live one day as a lion
Than live a hundred years as a sheep
I'd rather reign in hell than serve in heaven
Live my dreams out in reality and not in my sleep
Lukas Graham - Before The Morning Sun
This one is a very old favourite - the oldest on this list - as I first heard this song in 2012. I guess it could be considered cheating and not really Lukas' words entirely, as it's a rephrasing of a Benito Mussolini quote and a quote from poem Paradise Lost by John Milton. But the last line is solely original and the choice to put them together works so beautifully.
Rose gardens filled with thorns

'Cause darling I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream

While she mainly writes love songs, this is what keeps her "cliché topic" apart from the rest. In this case, she perfectly shows how she's delicate and dreamy a first glance but underneath there's thorns ready to tear you apart and nightmares ready to haunt you.
But it’s in my roots, in my veins
In my blood and I stain every heart that I use to heal the pain
Adele - River Lea
I only recently listened to Adele's new album as it finally got on Spotify and the lyrics of this song stood out amongst a sea of beautiful songs on the album. She's been tainted from her environment, like a lake from pollution, and now everyone she gets into contact with is stained because the pollution is so deep within her.
