Where Are You From? & The Different Answers We Give | Lists
Lately, I've noticed how you give different answers to the question "Where are you from?" depending on whom you're speaking to. You adapt to the situation and even if you're asked exactly the same question by different people, you'll know they're not asking for the same type of answers.
But what do you tell them? How to you differentiate between them and how specific do you want to get? I've attempted to compile a list below because I find it quite a fascinating question.
If you're abroad and someone asks you...
If you're out an about in your country and someone asks you...
But what do you tell them? How to you differentiate between them and how specific do you want to get? I've attempted to compile a list below because I find it quite a fascinating question.
If you're abroad and someone asks you...
- You say the name of your country
If you're out an about in your country and someone asks you...
- You say the name of your city or the biggest city you leave near
If you're talking to someone familiar with the area you live in...
- You say your specific town or your city quarter
If you're talking to someone with extreme knowledge about your town / city quarter
- You say your street name
This was a very light and short little blog post but it's just something I had on my mind and wanted to write about. Isn't it a bit odd? Maybe that's just me but I can sometimes struggle with how specific to get. Sometimes, I'll say I'm from Copenhagen, even though I live in one of the suburb towns just outside our capital.
Generally, I pretend to go more broad rather than specific because people can ask follow-up clarifying questions but if someone asks you and you answer the name of your small town that they've never heard of, it can get a bit awkward.
There's not much sense to this post, but I've vowed to keep at it with posting whatever I want on here and use this space to jot down my thoughts, which this certainly is an example of. I still find the topic interesting.
