The BA-Project Countdown

The last week before hand-in of my bachelor project rolled around and oddly, I feel okay about it. This project has been a cause of worry for a long time but it also feels weird to approach the end.

I decided to write down these last fews days, adding an update every day about what I have worked on each day. But I better talk about status quo; the introduction with research questions, delimitation, method, analysis, discussion and further analysis were all written. Other than editing and tweaking of existing chapters, only the conclusion and the Danish abstract remained entirely. Mum had read through all of this and as mention in this post thought it looked good. Now, onto the countdown.

7 Days To Go
4,5 hours (12.00-16.30)
I travelled to my writing partner's flat and we worked non-stop in the time listed above. I continued to make the corrections suggested by Mum that I had worked on yesterday as well. I also got around to rewriting the further discussion part that I had never been quite happy with. My partner worked on the Danish abstract and began work on the conclusion. I got finished writing and tweaking the entire analysis and discussion chapter, which is over 20 pages!, and then we went through it. I was still feeling a bit queasy due to period pains but it felt nice to finally get all my mother's suggestions incorporated properly.

6 Days To Go
2,5 hours (10.00 -12.30)
I worked by myself at home in the garden today, both enjoying the fresh air, the warm sun and a happy dog, who was having a grand old time. I started by generating all the data models myself, as the once we got from Google Analysis was in Danish like the questionnaire, and after a talk with Mum I didn't want Danish text in the model anymore. Then I took a short break to photograph the garden and Hallie, as well as jumping on the trampoline and playing with her. I returned to work, now seeking shade after an hour in the sun. I worked on the conclusion and actually managed to finish it! Of course, it still needs editing and I have to confirm everything with my writing partner but a very productive morning.

5 Days To Go
15 minutes (14.45-15.00)
As suggested by the time above I did hardly any work today. In my defence, I was feeling absolutely knackered from dressage training with my horse this morning. However, Mum read through all the things I added yesterday and the day before and again, it got her stamp of approval and the time above indicates how long it took for me to edit her very few suggestions. Also, objectively more important, our supervisor read the analysis and discussion section as well as further research and it was nothing but praise and thumbs up. He seems very satisfied, which is so great to hear. Also, we now know the date for the oral defence of our project; 7th of June, which honestly suits me fine. I've sent over the project to my partner, who'll read through the changes tomorrow and hopefully finish the abstract.

4 Days To Go
15 minutes (16.00-16.15)
Again, I didn't really work on the project at all. However, I did quickly glance at what I was sent by my writing partner when she finished the abstract and added some comments all over the document. But not much more than that. Never would I have thought I'd be able to have such a slow weekend running up to the hand-in of such a big project but apparently we're well on our way to being done. It feels odd...

3 Days To Go
4,5 hours (09.00-13.00 & 15.30-16.00)
I drove to my writing partner's flat in the morning, struggling to get up "early" as always. We read through the comments she had made the day before and read through the whole abstract. Then we spent quite a while to sort out all our references, we had just thrown them into a document but most of them were at least together and we only needed to hunt down a few. Then we decided to call it a day, my writing partner promising to do the read through first and I'll do it tomorrow. When I returned home, I played around the downloading the data nicely, which had been problem before but I got it sorted out fairly quickly. Very productive day and not long now.

2 Days To Go
1 hour (16.00-17.00)
I read through around half the whole project, just editing small details. In total, it's looking really good. I edited and took into account my writing partner's comments first before I embarked on the read. However, it's so difficult to read the text objectively as I've read it so many times and it feels like I know the words by heart. I was also a bit distracted as I was so excited to go see Troye perform later. I wrote about that experience in a blogpost here.

1 Day To Go
4 hours (07.30-08.30 & 09.00-12.30 & 13.00-13.30)
I woke up early before heading to university to meet with my writing partner and our supervisor one last time. I still needed to read though the rest of the project, as well as taking to account my Mum's corrections to the abstract and I almost finished before I had to head out the door. We had an hour before the set meeting with our supervisor and we finished the table of content and checking the location of everything and that it was looking nice. Then we had an hour meeting with our supervisor, which was really nice and reassuring as he thinks we've done a good job. Then it sort of turned into a casual chat but still with him dropping great information and answering our final questions. Afterwards, we sat down, I made the front page and we read through the abstract and the conclusion one more time. We headed to my Dad's work and there we got printed 5 copies, two for the university, one for my writing partner, one for me and one for Mum. We felt so grateful that we could print at Dad's work as it took away a big amount of stress about finding a place that could do it properly. I'm so happy with how they look and I've promised myself not to open them because I can't do anymore now and I know I would be upset if I spotted a mistake. Now, just the hand-in remains.

Hand-In Day
I woke early in the morning, around 06.30, with a gut feeling something was off. Despite my claims above, I went back to check formal requirement and surely enough it was mandatory to have both characters and number of actual pages listed on the front page. The latter remained from our front page. With a bit of stress, Dad reassured me and got the people at his work to print two more copies, which I drove by and picked up before heading to meet my writing partner at 10 AM. Everything went smoothly after that but it took hours for the shakiness that settled in my body earlier to leave. I literally had shaking hands and tense shoulders for so long. Afterwards, I hung out with the four people from my study group, who are all my close friends; just chilling, having a cold cider and later going out for lunch. When the clock passed 12 and it was out of my hands, I didn't feel better immediately. It took a while for the realisation to take hold. Especially because we still have the oral examination left but I'm so happy, more so as I'm writing this now, that the written part is over. It's been quite the experience.
