Troye Sivan Concert in Copenhagen

Seeing Troye in concert was incredible and surreal. He was adorable and sounded absolutely amazing. I never thought I'd go to a concert by myself but I didn't even feel out of place. Taking photos were almost impossible in the lighting and in the mass of people but I have added a couple throughout that were the best out of the bunch, though that's not saying much. I honestly didn't get my phone out a lot as I wanted to enjoy it in the moment rather than document it. In the photo below, he's wearing an embroidered denim jacket that was tossed on stage to him.

My first experience with Troye of that day actually started much earlier, around 1 PM where I randomly heard his voice on the radio station at the stables. I was caught off guard, though honestly I shouldn't have been of course he'd be doing radio interviews. It was just so surreal to hear him on a station I've been listening to for years. Him and the hosts were chatting about tour life, how he goes to sleep in one city and wakes up in another (like with Berlin to Copenhagen) and the host also got him to be a bit self-reflective when they mentioned his YouTube channel is turning 10 next year.

They had a listener tune in to win tickets for tonight's show and the listener, who was named Lærke, had to guess at least two out of three songs Troye were humming. I've listened to this segment before on Smag på P3. Troye hummed very well, despite excuses from having just woken up an hour prior. He hummed Adele's Hello, Michael Jackson's Thriller and Mø & Major Lazor's Lean on. Lærke got the first two right and won the tickets. She was so timid on air but also very cute and Troye was an absolute sweetheart. Especially when he tried to pronounce Mø of whom he is a big fan.

They played his song YOUTH between segments and when they were saying goodbye they said they had chosen a special goodbye song to him, which was Aqua's Barbie Girl. It's apparently one of the first songs, together with Backstreet Boys' Everybody, that he ever recalls hearing and liking Barbie Girl actually made him worry because it was a "girl" song but obviously he's now much less worried about gender stereotypes.

The radio segment has been archived here and they start talking about Troye about 45 minutes in. It made me really excited to see him later on and I just felt super excited to hear him live and engage with him, even if it's just part of a crowd.

I bought the VIP ticket for the concert the moment it went on sale and I got a notification e-mail in December. Initially, Copenhagen hadn't been in the first Europe listing posted on Twitter by Troye but as things turned out, Copenhagen actually became the very last concert of his Europe leg after Troye had to move his Oslo and Stockholm concerts to September.

The VIP were let in at 6.30 PM and I only arrived about fifteen minutes before that. However, watching the line of people, which wrapped around the building, who had been there for hours were insane. I love poster and Troye's cute little signature with a crooked heart.

It was a bit of pushing and discussion, thankfully civilised, when finding our places but I was third row! Which was really cool and so close to Troye when he came on later. Astrid S was his opening act and I had heard her on Shawn Mendes' song Air before and really liked her vocals. She was so cute and though I had not heard a lot of the songs she played, they sounded really good. She has an EP coming out this Friday and I'll definitely have to check it out. I also really like the fact that she's Norwegian, I don't know, I just love when Scandinavia is positively represented.

Troye came on in a haze of smoke and pink and blue lights, at 9 PM, and instantly it felt like such a connection. He played so many of his great songs, and one thing I did during the concert was to dot down the setlist. I'm always a big fan of lists.

Troye was the sweetest in-between songs, where he would talk to us. I'm not going to write down everything in chronological order but simply group things together as I please.

A favourite of mine was when he tried to speak Danish. Mind you it was very limited but he said "tak" by himself and then got audience members to say "jeg elsker dig" and "rødgrød med fløde" and imitated it, which sounded precious. When we went crazy, he'd laugh and say how he loved that all he needed was to say the name of a fruit desert to get that reaction.

Generally, throughout the whole thing, he was just grinning like the happiest boy ever. He radiated boyish charm. He was amazingly beautiful as it oozed out of him just how much he was loving life up there on the stage. Incredible and contagious and it really set the tone for the whole thing.

At one point, him and his band also aimed water guns over the crowd to cool us down, which honestly was lovely because it was extremely hot due to standing so many people so close together. Another time, he asked to get a phone from an audience member as he could see someone was on facetime with someone who couldn't come. She hadn't been able to get a ticket but Troye made her promise to come see him next time, which he also promised would be soon, which made everyone really excited, myself included. However, Troye's definition of soon is always questionable.

Before starting his only cover in the set, he asked if someone were on a date that night. Not many answered but a couple near the front were on their fifth date and Troye praised them for their choice of date "venue". And dedicated the two upcoming songs, though they were sad love songs, to any couples in the audience. Hearing him sing a song by Amy Winehouse, someone who we know is such a big inspiration for him, was chilling and I couldn't help but think of when I first heard him sing that song. Which was the cover he uploaded on YouTube and I watched some time early 2014 when I found his channel.

I always found it very cool when people get together an coordinate some show of signs in the audience. I wasn't a part of it myself but when it happened, I felt moved. Troye was getting downright emotional when he started singing HEAVEN and the loads of audience members held up signs saying "THIS IS OUR HEAVEN" with a blue heart as displayed below. Later in the show, the audience held up more signs, this time requesting that Troye sang OTP, a really old song he made for fun in late 2012. He wouldn't, or more likely due to the impromptu request couldn't, do it but he promised that he'd do it when he came back. It'll be interesting to see if he can keep that promise.

Towards the end, he was talking about how he was nervous because the next time he'll be standing on a stage will be in Las Vegas for the Billboard Music Awards this weekend. He said he'd try to picture it as if he was still doing his gig in Copenhagen because he felt so great there with us. At another time, he also said he was having some of the most fun ever. He said we just felt like a group of people hanging out together and I agree with him. At least for me, it felt intimate and safe, even if I was on my own.

I honestly felt so honoured in a way that we all got to share that experience as a community and be with Troye for that special evening as he finished the European part of his tour. When I came home I sat down to write notes, which I've now made into this post with my ears still ringing. It was a breathtaking performance and oh how we sang along, probably terribly but that belongs in concerts. Thankfully, as a big crowd it somehow comes together and harmonise beautifully. Or maybe it just feels like that because of the energy. It was worth all the money and I'm so happy to have seen him in person, as it's more real than through a screen.

Troye seemed to be genuinely having the best time, which was probably my favourite part, other than his amazing voice. During one of the encore songs, we all held up our phone with the torch on and Troye said it looked so pretty from up there. I wasn't sure if I believed him but he added the photo in a tweet afterwards and I agree with him entirely.

I really do hope he comes back because I'd go back to see him in a heartbeat. His fame is growing by the minute, so it might get more difficult, but I don't care. Of course, I have to see him if he comes back to my city. It was such a special event that seemed like so much more than "just" a concert.
